potassium....that's probably the problem and many people have this problem. especially if they are on certain meds or are very active (sports etc.) eat bananas, drink oj and if you will go to walmart etc. they sell over the counter potassium pills for about $2.00 a bottle. i take meds for high blood pressure daily and my doctor prescribed me a potassium pill, but the over the counter ones will probably work great for you.
also, my daughter had legs cramps really bad when she was younger and the doctor said it was where her body was growing at a fast rate (growing pains)
hope i was of some help :)

It sounds like a vitamin deficiency. Make sure that you are eating a balanced diet. I found if I ate bananas it would help bring my potassium level up as this can be one cause of them. Also if make sure you are getting enough sleep at night. Lack of sleep can also cause charlie horses ( I don't know why). My doctor gave me both of these suggestions since I used to have exactly the same problem and it really helped.

When cramping like charlie horses occur, it sometimes is a sign that you need to have Potassium in your body. Eat bananas and even go to the pharmacy and buy over the counter Potassium. You will be surprised that within a day or two the cramps will subside.

I used to get the leg cramps and charlie horses my doctor told me it was possibly lack of potassium and suggested I eat at least one banana a day. I did that and within three days I was cured. Now I eat lots of food with potassium.

Well - can I ask if you are overweight? I am and I get them.
My doctor suggested a prescription called Quinine Sulfate 325 mg, one at bedtime. works for me! Those suckers are awful!
Also, tonic water, I have heard helps also. Some of our elderly
residents in our bldg. use this and it helps them.
I am not sure what the connection between sleeping and these
stupid things are - but that's when it hits me! If I don't take my
meds I will always get one! Try that! :)

When you wake up with the pain, you need to make your self get out of bed and walk. That will stop the worst of the pain!

My brother-in-law had this problem. Now he eats bananas a lot and drinks gatoraide (potassium and dehydration). Seems to think that helps prevent it.
