There isn't anything I have that I wouldn't give up if my life or any of my family's lives were in danger.

But the one thing I hold dear is a musical jewelry box my dad gave me when I was 9.

There is no material possession that I can't live without.

Material stuff comes and goes in life. The older I get the more I realize none of it matters. Only the things that you have disqualified in your question (people & dogs) are worth anything.

After going through Hurricanes Andrew, Katrina & Rita, I see how quickly EVERYTHING can be lost.

The quilt my grandmother made for me. Each of 27 grandchildren received one when they married or left home. She's been gone for about 30 years now, but my quilt reminds me of her whenever I look at it.

My dad bought me a cross when I was very young and I wear it everday - could never part with it - just has alot of sentimental value to me. He gave it to me when I was about 5 - it's so pretty.

My pocket knife I got for Christmas 45 years ago. I was just 7 and my parents trusted me. I tried never to betray their trust either.

Back then we were allowed to bring our knives to school (with parent permission) to whittle and carve during recess.
