I want to start a carpet cleaning business for my self, assuming i had 500.00 a month for advertising via direct mail and sent 5000 flyers
a month , is it realistic to assume .01 % response rate giving me 50 customers a month?

if i were you i would personally advertise in newspapers. occationaly purchasing a day subscription for all who recieve a newspaper.
they usually read on the front something like. "todays issue of blah blah is brought to you by something something" and they
would have an option for you to post an ad on the front page.
occationaly you could even request that a flyer be put into a sunday edition of a newspaper.

try to keep direct mailings for "special offers".
start small. once you get an adequate customer base move up to the occational radio ad. after that tv ads. etc etc

as for the flyers, if you do end up using them go to local buisinesses such as grocery stores or gas stations and ask if you may post a flyer in the front window 90% of buisiness owners and\or operators wont have a problem with this. if they say no, politely thank them for their time. as this may leave a positive impact on them and possibly opening up an advertising oportunity in the future.

competition.
you should get aquainted with your competitor's service rates as you may be able to offer a "better deal"

Word of Mouth.
almost nothing gets sent around faster. tell some people, offer them a free service so they may be able to tell their friends of your buisiness. Remember this though - for every satisfied customer they tell 3 people. every dissatisfied customer tells 10

commercial clients.
go around to local buisinesses and appartment complexes and inquire about their current provider. share your rates vs competitor rates.

i helped my father when i was young with his buisiness. i personally just went around school telling people about his buisiness. surely enough his first 5 customers were close relatives of the people i went to school with.

i truly hope this helps! and good luck in the future!!!
