it's also the reason we rant about family and end it with "but I'm not wrong, am I?". We're hoping the person we're talking to will say something like, "no not at all. they're the ones that are crazy."

Since your asking in the Psychology section I would hazard to guess that maybe people just want to receive comfort from finding out that other people share the same thoughts about a topic that the poster does. They are looking for confirmation from people who are supposed to know since they are taking the role of answerer.

Do you think they really want an answer, or just to make a statement, in a question format just to satisfy this yahoo answers format? Too many of those I have read, and they're too dogmatic, irritating and stupid, but they keep on keepin' on. Oh well. God Bless you.

To make a statement. Such a question is known as a "rhetorical" question; the statement consists of both the question and the obvious answer.

Because people want to hear that they are right. This is the bad thing about the internet, no matter how stupid you are, you can find a bunch of people to agree with you.

People love the feeling of having their opinion voiced and hopefully someone else will have the same opinion.
Or maybe they want someone to try to prove them wrong.
