Because they are different. People like to pay money to show their personalities. Some dye thier hair, or get a tattoo, or piercings.

It started out a a fetish thing, people who like pain got them, then it turned into a fad, like pet rocks and cement geese!

They are becoming acceptable in society. Like tattoos. More & more people are getting them because they are not frowned upon as they use to be.
