OH YEAH! I got my ears pierced last January (2004), and I have problems with them all the time getting infected and icky and scabby. But not all people have that problem. It depends.

They get infected so easy, no matter where you're pierced. I cleaned all mine out two times a day for like a month after I got them and then at least once a week after that. Sometimes it's because you're allergic to the metal and sometimes they just get dirty naturally, so be careful.

Yes, and they can remain stubbornly infected for a long time. This isn't necessarily a reason not to do it, just a hazard to be aware of.

yes i had my belly button pierced i had to take it cause it was starting to get infected.. .if i left it in i would have a belly button.. of how bad it could of been

Im sorry, but are you stupid? Of course they can! Especially be careful with the tongue, you can die from that getting infected. If your careful, it wont happen. Ive had my belly button ring for 9 years, its never given me any trouble.
