I can think of many examples why it is wrong.
A man known as a liar to his friends and to the world, is never truly respected. Others may laugh along with him at the stories he tells, but he will never be thought of as having strong character or be believed in any serious matter.
Lies hurt others and cause those who love you immense pain.
Also, the truth (hmmm) is that most people know when you are lying, though you might think yourself a good actor. Some do not take kindly to being treated as though they are stupid or easy to manipulate.
It's easier to be a liar than an honest man. It's hard to respect those who take the easy and weak way out.

Absolutely nothing. If anyone is stupid enough to believe you, they deserve to be lied to. Its just another way that the church tries to manipulate.

If someone has ever lied to you about something important, you wouldn't be asking this question.
