I had eye surgery and my eyes are extremely sensitive to glare, especially from computers. I was told that flat panel monitors have less glare and are less strain on the eye than traditional computer monitors. Is this true?

Yes, because they are usually coated for less glare, but just the fact that it's flat, reduced the glare. Flat Panel are usually LCD Monitors, and use a differant lighting, so they are less strain on the eyes, Big monitors use Tube Lighting.

It' has alot less strain on the Eyes, and more options to adjust the screen settings to reduce the strain on your eyes even less.
You should always work with a light on, you shoudn't use your computer in the dark, if you're worried about eye strain.

If you wear glasses, wear them while using a computer.

I had a regular monitor and got headaches from it. I now have a flat screen one and have no problem. I would say they do have less glare and are easier on the eyes.

They certainly have less glare, just be carefull to turn off bright lights in the room and turn the brightness down on your computer, also take plenty of breaks.
