Statistically more women are in therapy, 5 times as many as men. 3 times as many women are on anti-depression medication, 5 times as many on anti-anxiety meds.
It's believed that numbers of men in need of treatment are underreported but I don't think that measures up to the gap between genders. Just look at advertisements for mental health medication, why dont' they market to men if there's an untapped market there?
Does taking medication to regulate a mental disorder make you mentally ill or does avoiding treatment make you so?
Part of the problem I think is that Mental Health is a male-defined. much of the behavior that is natural to women is considdered a symptom of mental disease. Mental wellness in a woman means that she behaves in a manner that a conclave of almost entirely male psychologists understands.
As Mentally Ill is defined what chance does a woman have of being better off than a man?

Good question, I took a Psychology class this summer and I'm trying to remember if this was mentioned.
1. I know that women are more likely to seek help than men. I think men are of the mind set that real men don't need help, just suck it up.
2.Women have better support groups than men are are more likely to talk about their problems with their girlfriends ect.
3. More men commit suicide but that is because they usually chose more violent means than women and are therefore more successul.
Too answer your question, I would like to say women but I think it is because they are more likely to talk about it and seek help than men

No one knows because more women seek treatment than men. Men are seriously under reported. For example, there are lots of men who suffer from eating disorders, but there are no real stats on it because men are much less likely to recognize it or seek treatment for it.
Perhaps that's why there are more men than women in prison - untreated mental illnesses causes them to become violent.

It would seem, on the surface, to be women. I think that is only because women are more likely to seek help for an illness. If more men were honest and tried to get the help they needed, it would be a fifty fifty split.

I think it depends on what you mean by mentally ill. From where I am I know lots more women who are on antidepressants. In fact I really don't know of any guys that are taking a psychotic drug.

I think women because the men drive us crazy! Just kidding. I do think women though because we tend to worry more about things and men generally relax and don't stress. Just my own opinion no scientific proof.
