From what I remember, I think it was "Moonlight Sonata" (aka - "Piano Sonata No.14, In C Sharp Minor, Op.27, No.2 'Moonlight': I Adagio sostenuto") by Beethoven.

I don't remember what piece he was playing, but I do remember that when I heard it in the movie, it is one I was familiar with. I am positive it is by either Mozart, Beethoven or Chopin. I know that isn't a great answer, but at least you know it isn't an obscure song by an obscure composer.
