It really would depend on the situation, Lane. But judging by the tenor and tone of your question, I would lean toward fighting the good fight and carrying on. My rule of thumb is that if it's something truly worth fighting for, then by all means fight on! When your core values or principles are being challenged, you must never surrender (or even compromise). No one and nothing is worth that. It may be the more difficult path -- indeed, it invariably is -- but it's worth it, at least to me.
For instance, if someone attacks me, I never turn the other cheek. I fight back and never surrender, ever! My philosophy is that I can never been defeated and I never shall be. I simply won't allow it to happen. I'd far rather die, quite honestly. And if it be death, then I say: make it a glorious death! Fight on, always, fight on! (Inspirational, huh?) ;-)

it would help if I know what kind of situation you were talking about, is it mental/emotional or physical?
Two important things that I do.
1. Realize that the situation is temporary, it will not be this way forever. You may be in the valley at the moment but eventually you will be on the mountain top,
2. Break the problem or situation down into manageable pieces then attack it.
Often a situation seems overwhelming because it seems so large and impossible. Set small goals for yourself and attack it one step at a time.
3. Think abut the end product and how good you will feel once you have succeeded.
You can do it!!! Good Luck!!!!!

I close my eyes, take a very deep breath, meditate on the outcome that I ultimately want to see, and focus all of my energy on doing what I can to make that a reality. It may be overwhelming, but if it's worth the fight, then I'll do my best to see it through.
Good luck! :)

Step back and look at the big picture. Make a list of the the things I have to deal with. Prioritize the list, pick the most important item and deal with it only.
One of the ways people become overwhelmed is they focus on all they have to deal with, instead of picking one thing and dealing with it.

Disengage and give yourself sometime to think. Then imagine that there are others who are having even worse problems. I am not not trying to be funny here, but taking it to an extreme imagine how families in Lebanon or Iraq are getting through their day.

CRY. I start crying. It may sound weird, but after holding back and trying to be strong for so long, i finally can't deal with it anymore and i have to let go by crying and then by picking myself back up and improve myself and the things around me.
