Joseph Schumpeter gave this definition in his "Theory of Economic Development":
This concept includes five cases: (1) Introduction of a new good, or a new quality of an existing good, (2) Introduction of a new method of production, which is not necessarily founded on a new scientific discovery, but may consist of a new form of commercial handling of the good, (3) Opening a new market, regardless of whether it existed before, (4) Discovering a new source of factors of production, again, regardless of whether it existed before, and (5) Changing the organization of an industry, for example, achieving monopoly position or breaking someone else's monopoly position.
