Hoy's father reflects on Olympic fall
The father of Olympian Andrew Hoy says he is bitterly disappointed his son was thrown in the Olympic equestrian three-day event.
Culcairn-born Hoy was only five jumps from the end of the cross country phase when his hopes were dashed.
His father, Jim, says four years of preparation went down the drain in seconds.
Hoy won team gold in Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney, but has missed out on an individual gold medal.
"I spoke with him probably 10 minutes later and he said the horse just got its one front leg hooked back and that being the case, they can't get that leg forward and, of course, the horse will land on the front leg and, of course, that tips them to one side dramatically and just pelted him out of the saddle," he said.
Hoy's team, which includes Eurongilly's Olivia Bunn, missed out on a medal, finishing sixth.
However, Hoy's wife Bettina, who is representing Germany, was a member of the gold-medal winning eventing team.

French Baron Pierre de Coubertin is regarded (rightly) to be the person who reinvented the Olympic Games. He masterminded and organised (with aid) the primary Modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens, after which as a proud Frenchman made definite the moment video games have been in Paris in 1900. Apparently he pissed off the British and they did not wish to take part, even though fortunately for Australia the scoop did achieve London and our first olympian (and double gold medallist) Edwin Flack went throughout from Oxford (I suppose) University to compete within the athletics. But that is an extra tale...
