My niece is 13 years old and she came to me with a concern about her body. She says she is passing alot of white and sometimes clear discharge out her vagina. And I didnt know what to tell her so I just said it might be a yeast infection and she got some OTC yeast infection medicine and took it all. But she says it didnt help. I keep trying to get her to go to the dr. but she wont go she says its too emberassing. Do you have any idea what this could be.

clear to white discharge with no odor is completely normal for a female who is of menstruating age. If the discharge were to become thicker and/or have a yellow or green color to it or take on an unusual odor, I would suggest a doc visit as it could be a yeast infection (and/or STD). In this situation, that doesn't seem to be the case. let her know this is normal and that all women experience it to some degree (discharge is the biproduct of the vagina ridding itself of dead cells). If she's still worried, have her talk to the school nurse concerning what is or is not normal for her age, or get her setup with an appt with an OBGYN - which if she's sexually active she needs to be having yearly exams anyhow. You can get affordable, confidential exams at the county health department.

It could be yeast or bacteria vaginosis. Look up those two and see if it matches up with any of her symptoms. If her discharge is clear and has the consistency of egg whites that means she's ovulating and when she is most fertile. Discharge changes at all times during a woman's cycle if this something she has never seen before she needs to go to the doctor. While a yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis are not STDs if let untreated they can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and then infertility. Please go with her so she can figure this out and get her on birth control.

13 and having sex? That is a bigger problem I think.

It could be a variety of things, one is definately an STD. Ask her if there is odor involved. Secondly, is she still having a regular period? Does the discharge continue while she is on her period? Is she just starting her period? Women discharge every month, but it is only 'bloody' during the period. Some women discharge much more than others. Clear is normal, anything beyond clear...there is a problem.

Talk to the girls parents and get her to a doctor... I don't think OTC medicines for a 13 year old are a wise idea unless recommened by a doctor.

If she is old enough to take on the responsibility of sex, she needs to do all that comes with that responsibility and that would be getting check ups...

Talk to the parents! I'd want to know if my daughter is not healthy!

First, I would tell her mother. Then, go to the doctor. If she did not have yeast infection before, a doctor should see her. If she is too embarrassed to see her own doctor, maybe go to a Planned Parenthood for a checkup?

Since she has had sex, I'm thinking that perhaps the problem is an STD; she should be checked out immediately by a doctor; her future fertility could be at stake!

I belive the discharge is fairly normal. If it is smelly, greenish-yellow, or really thick, then it would be an STD. But since she is or has been sexually active, she should go to a gyno.

Having white or clear discharge doesnt mean a STD because then you should be getting yellow discharge if that the sitaution. Usually alot of clear discharge isnt technically discharge it can happen from being aroused.
