how do I know if it works, without taking it off?

the only way to know is to short the main post to the small post on the solenoid. if the starter is good and the solenoid is good then it will turn over. this bypass the switch and put power to the starter wright from the batt. starters don't go bad very often it is more than likely the solenoid.
