do i need to take the door off, do i need a special tool.

please don't try those things mentioned that spring can be very dangerous. Go to a nearby parts store like auto-zone or napa. And ask for a door spring compressor. They are relatively cheap and even if you only use it once it is worth the piece of mind of not injuring yourself. I bought one for myself to do the door pins on my jimmy and have found a lot of people that I know have used it as well. A nice tool to have for about $10

I have done it with a pair of channel locks several times but sometimes you have to go looking for the spring. Dennis C I think has a really good idea. Reguardless you should always wear a pair of safety glasses. That spring has enough power when compressed to knock your eye out of the socket. And no, you do not need to remove the door with either one of these methods. I think I'll use the wire and vise method from now on.

i put a piece of bailing wire thru the spring then put it in a vice and compress it. then twist the ends of the wire tight and put it in the door frame. then cut the wire. that's how i did it
