"Can't Cry Hard Enough" by the Williams Brothers (1991).
It's so sad and despondent bordering on inconsolable, but with a hint of stoicism and hope through admission of futility and fatalism. Are those enough contradictions for one song? I also like the acoustics of that recording.
The song has stuck with me since I first heard it. It took on a more personal meaning recently when I feared a long time internet friend, who is being treated for leukemia, stopped responding to my IMs for a few months and I dreamed she died. Turns out she is still alive. Yesterday she IMed me and said she was out of isolation after a bone marrow transplant.

The Song of Songs by King Solomon (look in the Bible).
Oh, and the reason is because it has much merit to be in the Bible. Maybe it's not the greatest of all time (considering that all time hasn't been experienced yet), but it's definitely a classic.

Oh my goodness, sweetie. You're gonna get me misty-eyed. It has to be "A House Is Not A Home" by the late Luther Vandross. That man's voice could make an ice princess melt. It was playing when I met my current sweetie and we celebrated our six month anniversary last night(and did we ever!).

I like Whitney Houston's: I will always love you
it is a great song but I think that my favorite is by Celine Dion:
WHEN I FALL IN LOVE
Because it reminds me of what true love is all about!
If you have never heard the song, it says that when I fall in love it will be forever and that if you give someone your heart that you should give it completely and to me that is a true definition of LOVE

I think I'd have to say "Love Theme From the Godfather". The melody, and the words are so passionate.
