Yes, you have a problem in your airbag system and it has been disabled. The 1 - 3 pattern is trouble code 13. You need to take your vehicle to your dealer IMMEDIATELY. NOT YOUR MECHANIC, YOUR DEALER. Please do not attempt to diagnose or repair the problem yourself. I cannot believe that some of the people answering this question is telling you not to worry about it. That airbag is designed to help you from receiving massive head and face injuries when involved in a accident. Only a damn fool would ignore this problem.

FYI : there was a recall on that model year vehicle for the Airbag Deactivation Switch, The TSB number and issue date is 98S20 August 1998.

I have a 97 cavalier. My airbag light started blinking after my airbag deployed. The system is designed to notify you of airbag deployment via the dashboard light (in case you didn't notice the smelly white sack hanging out of your steering wheel..).

I'm going to assume that your airbag did not deploy. In the front bumper of your car there are sensors that detect pressure on different points. If any of those sensors are triggered, even slightly, it can set that light off. This is just a failsafe to encourage you to take your car to a mechanic to make sure everything is ok with that safety system.

I might be wrong with this next tidbit, but I believe that after that light starts to blink, your car deactivates your airbag to prevent accidental deployment (since your car assumes the system is unstable until a mechanic has reset it).

It's your car. It is your decision. The mechanic will do his utmost to persuade you to have it corrected because he wants your money. If you feel safe just using your seatbelt then do not concern yourself with it.

My light still blinks. =)

The blinking light lets you know there is a problem in the system. Take it to a qualified service center for repair. It could be an impact sensor malfunction or a wire broken. The air bag system will not operate in this situation if you were involved in an accident. Or the odds are against it working. The bag system is extremely dangerous and service should not be attempted unless you have the knowledge and experience to do so. Good luck.

You need to get it checked out at the dealer. It could mean that it just needs to be serviced or checked to see that it is proper working order. Or it may mean that it is malfunctioning. I actually had this happen on a 1995 T-Bird and had to have it checked out as well. May cost a little bit for the labor. Could be either of the above situations. You just want to be sure what the problem is because in the unfortunate event you have an accident that is the hardest way to learn that it was needing service and failed you. Get it checked. Best of luck

I had the same thing happen with my old Mazda. It probably just needs a fuse replaced.
If you're really worried you can get a diagnostic check to find out codes for things that could possibly be wrong. Just take it to an Autozone or like an auto supply store, they should do it for free.

Is what it means - your airbags might not work in the event of an accident. You should have it looked at.

Oh, that airbag.

My airbag was blinking because she got something in her eye.
