Nothing is sacred in this era, everything is open to being marketed and exploited, no matter how much grief it has caused.
I would doubt, however, that 9/11 is "probably the most tragic event in U.S. history". Certainly the most publicised, in this time of media swarm, but the most tragic? What about the civil war, or the destruction of Native American culture? Slavery? Even the Kennedy assassination could be seen to be a more tragic event in the context of U.S history... It's just how the media has played 9/11 which has made it seem more of a tragedy than it really is - which of course comes back to your question.
Although I am dubious about the way the event was publicised, I don't believe there is much point in condemning those who are capitalising on it - after all, that's basically their job, and if people have an issue with it, well the coins won't sell. Since we know they will, one can only assume that these "entrepreneurs" are just giving the public what they want - more of the tragic spectacle they've been hanging on to for 5 years.

Hmm well you have to think of all the movies and things you ever saw. How many were about world war 2? What happened that made us get into world war 2? The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. At the time, that was like the equivelent to 9/11 now. They have made movies about it, just like they are beginning to do now with 9/11. So my opinion is that there will always be some selfish bastards who make money off of other people's tragedies.

I don't think anyone needs a commemorative coin for the 5 yr anniversary of Sept 11th and all the innocent people who died that day...that date and the images of that plane hitting the second tower will remain within us until we die...But there are people out there who will see dollar signs and sugar-coat it to where they want every American to believe that we should have this coin to commemorate the 5yr anniversary of that tragic day (so they can make money). Making money is the name of the game, but it can be carried too far. This happens to be one of them.

What caused 9/11 was that the terrorists despise us and and the capitalism we stand for, and they wanted to make us rethink our values.
I wouldn't call it a keen entrepreneurial spirit, but I can't help but think that such shameless, unapologetic money-grubbing behavior defies and foils everything that the terrorists hoped to accomplish. As long as people can do that, the terrorists will never get what they want.

They ought to be condemned. It's kind of like an airline company using it to advertise their high security standards or something. However, we live in a world where profit seems to matter more than respect for those who suffer or die in such tragic ways.

i dont think its right if they use it for their own use. but i thought when i saw that commercial they said some of the money went to the families of 9/11. that the coins were molded out of the material at ground zero

Anyone that tries to make a profit off of the grief and misfortunes of others have earned themselves a special place in hell..
I was also thinking about people that claimed to be Katrina victims and took things that belonged to the real victims out of selfishness..the same kind of thing..

I don't care that much for them, I wouldn't go and watch the movie or bouy the coins or whatever. I really don't care for the people who buy these things that keeps these people doing it over and over again. But, there is a demand for it and I can't blame them for trying, but it doesn't mean I have to participate.

that they shouldn't be running our government (yes- people in the government have been capitalizing off of 9/11- Dick Cheney still has stock options for Halliburton- the company that gets paid to rebuild countries after we bomb them)
