NOT REALLY---BUT WHEN SMOKE IS NEAR THINGS-THEN THE RESIDUE GETS ONTO THE SCREEN OR/& KEYBOARD.
SO I GUESS IF YOU NEVER CLEAN IT UP THEN THE KEYS WOULD STICK AND WHO COULDN'T SEE THE SCREEN---SO IT WOULD BE THEORICALLY POSSIBLE

Feeling brave?, feeling tough?, feeling like theres is nothing that can phase you? Try this...
With your computer turned off, open it up and wipe the blades on the power suppy fan with a cotton bud.
If anyone has smoked in the same room as the computer the cotton bud will be black, not brown or a bit grubby, but black.
The problem with smoking near a computer (or any air cooled electronics) is that the smoke from a cigarette contains tar, that is particles of a thick oil like substance. The tar will settle on the first surface it touches and stick there like wet glue. Then any dust in the air sticks to the tar and more tar sticks to the dust.
Very soon you have a nice fur coat on what needs to be an aerodynamic surface.
Immediate symptoms of smoking at a computer are increased power consumption (it takes more power to spin a furry fan blade) and increased processor temperature.
Processors are designed to have a given service lifetime at a certain temperature, exceed that temperature and you will be rapidly aging your cpu. Note that this happens way before you boil it completely.
"Ah ha!" you say "I have got air filters on mine".
Fair enough, that will help quite a bit, but not totally, also if you dont clean the filters very very often the will become clogged and asphyxiate your computer (well stop any fresh cold air getting in to do any cooling)

Absolutely! Second hand smoke has been linked to numerous health problems for computers. The Surgeon General has determined that second hand smoke is solely responsible for the reoccurring "ACK! I can't breathe!" message as well as the "cough, cough, hack!" message many smokers are finding on their monitors. Some health issues related are inflamed hard drive and broken "cup holder" (when combined with drinking coffee near the computer).

No, it is not really true. But, the smoke will leave a buildup inside your computer, on your monitor, and keyboard. And a keyboard is not an easy thing to clean! Over a long time, it may cause you to have some problems with your computer, but that is not really likely.

yes it can... the cigarette smoke will leave a residue on anything it comes in contact with and over time can cause certain components on the circuit boards to fail. It can also get in the fans and make more dust stick to them.
My advice would be to stop smoking, as it is a bad thing, but if you must, do it outside.

The tar and other chemicals can eventually harm the moving parts of your computer, like the door motors for your drives, but what those chemicals are doing to YOU is so much worse. He is trying to convince you to quit smoking, and that's the best thing he can do for you.

It isn't as much a problem now as it was back in the 1960s and 1970s -- when it could cause great harm. But it isn't particularly good for any electronics.
Of course, it is worse for you than it is for the machine.
