Why judge a cat because of the color of it's fur? It's the feline on the inside, people.

Okay not all people think black cats are bad luck, the Japanese believe that black cats are good luck. There is the belief that cats are the familiars of witches, so one that was black (the color of satan was supposed to be black) was a cat that belonged to someone who served satan, so these cats naturally had to be evil and therefore bring bad luck. But we also must remember that the ancient Egyptians viewed cats as gods and they haven't forgotten this.

Yes, it was superstitious to have anything "black", aka the occult; cats among them.
I have a great black cat. He hasn't been bad luck so far.
I also walk under ladders, step on cracks, stay on the thirteenth floor of a hotel, and perpetually spill salt. So far so good.

I heard that black cats are good luck in Wales and England; and white cats are considered unlucky in that region. I love black cats. They are so mysterious and gorgeous.

It's because it used to be associated with witches and magic... they were considered familiars, meaning the cat did the witches bidding while the witch was establishing an aliby.
