bought a 1994 olds and it has to run for about 10 minutes before it will shift into gear. It seems to run fine after that. Haven't driven it much, want to check everything out first. It had only been used a few times in the past year. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What you describe could be low fluid level, a plugged filter or hardened seals. You didn't say what type of Oldsmobile nor did you say wheter it is a 3 speed 3T40 or an overdrive 4T60E.

You need to check the fluid level with the engine running, Trans in Park and after you have gotten it to go into gear, that is--warmed up. You could try the Trans-X. It could help if your seals have hardened. It could also finish it off or not help.
If the tranny is full but it makes a whining noise especially when cold, you should have the filter changed because it may be plugged. If it is plugged you may have worse problems but we'll work on one step at a time.

Try changing the fluid and filter . Look in the trans pan for metal or brass shavings there will be a little black residue thats normal .The metal or brass is not .
