It has always been so. You can speak badly of your own but it is not okay for others to do so. You would gladly give your little brother a throttleing but get mad if someone else does it. Intresting bit of study of sociology for someone the take on.

well I don't know for sure..but I think it has a lot to do with social standing and power..I would be mortified to call a black person a *** ger..but I can understand that other black people can and do that...as a gay man I can on occasion be really insulted if someone called me a fa g got..but my friends can do that all the time....It's because it doesn't allow the person calling me fa g got or you *** ger to have any power over you..It can't be a put down..,because you would be putting down yourself...I becomes kind of a self deprecation humour....it also becomes almost a term of endearment because it lets the other person know that they understand.

An example that comes to mind is you looking in the mirror and saying that you're fat...but when someone else tells you that you're fat, you get extremely offended/hurt/pissed off. It's easier to take criticism when it comes from within, I guess.

I think it's like when you complain about your own family it's OK, but if someone outside of your family would say the same things you would be defensive. Hope this helps.

It's just like the fact you can rip on your own family, but no one wants an outsider to rip on them.
