If you mean re-formatting as doing a new install of the OS NO. Defragmenting is a myth. None of the files are actually moved. Instead the OS simply does a re-inventory if you will this improves performance somwehat but does not bring the PC back to a optimal state. ONLY Microsoft PCs require defragmenting. Try Linux.

No damage other than the wear and tear associated with using it-but why would you want to? Keep in mind if this is an IDE or EIDE drive this is just a high level format and doesn't do that much writing. Defrag probably does worse!

Yes, you don't want to defrag your hard drive every day. It causes more wear and tear than, for instance, web browsing, or doing e-mails. Of course, it doesn't do any more than "damage" than installing software does, so it's not something you should worry about. Just defrag all of your drives once a month, and it will last longer than it needs to last.

i imagine formatting is alot less stressfull than defragging or accessing anything, as the head will move logically from one end to the other as the formatting is just an organised deletion of everything.

Formatting is just a software based logical inventory management process for files and folders.
