It evens out the playoff situation.
3 Divisional winners plus the wild card.
The wild card winner is the team with the best 2nd place finish.
The team with the best record plays the wild card, unless they are form the same division. Then the divisional winner with the 2nd best record plays the wild card.
The Divisional Series is only best of 5.
The League series and World Series is best of 7.

Wildcards are usually the team with a good record but didn't win their division. After the three team win their division, the wildcard is decided on who has the next best record after the division winners (sometime the wildcard even have a better record than one of the division winners). Usually, the wildcard would play against the best team in record during the playoffs to start (except for curcumstances such as the best team in record and the wildcard are in the same division, in which the playoff seeding would be different). Sometimes, even wildcards would win it all (Marlins in 1997 and 2003, Angels in 2002, Red Sox in 2004) so don't discount on who's the wildcard is come this season.

The non-division winner from each league wins the wild card. The wild card team plays the team with the best record in the league in the Divisional series, unless they are from the same division. In that case, the wild card team plays the team with the 2nd best record in the league. Hope that helps.
