Maybe they have dried up.

Because of the heat, they should have been harvested a couple of weeks earlier, but the lack of manpower, due to deporting the Mexican workers, they were left to over ripen.

Not enough water. Haven't you heard? Half the US is in a drought.

I think it is too much water actually. But I am no gardner.
