Windows: easy to use, bad security (fixed with like 3 programs), tons of programs
Linux (depending on distro): hard to use (beginners have a high chance of destroying the OS), tons of programs, awesome security
Macs: easy to use, not that many good programs, good security
I hope this helps.

To do what? For an operating system qua operating system, I'd say Linux. Very stable, very secure, and a huge amount of open-source software. If you're looking for games or productivity software, probably Windows. If you're looking for video editing and the like, probably the Mac. You have to pick the field before you can determine which is best.

These are all good general purpose operating systems. Just remember this, like tools used by painters, builders and sculpters there is a tool for everything.
This is just my opinion but OpenVMS is the best general purpose opsys ever created by human beings. Unfortunately the original company that created it no longer is in business.
Of course, OpenVMS is now owned and sort of supported by HP but Digital created it and was the best at supporting it.
You may not know about OpenVMS but it was, how do you say it, 'sweet'!
It did not matter who you were or how much you did or did not know. OpenVMS offered something to everyone.
I used to be an OpenVMS System Manager and believe me when I tell you, I miss it.
You can say whatever you like about all of the current popular operating systems but the truth is OpenVMS was the "BEST!"
Best Wishes and have fun but be careful.

I use Windows XP Pro installed and run Linux Live to play with, by far Linux is fastly approaching to be the most secure ( non-hacking, non-viruses, etc.) I would vote Linux, but being freeware, there are not alot of good tech books out for linux just alot of trial by error forums and support..... It's a matter of preference to most.... I do not experience any problems with my XP Pro, I use Zone Alarm Firewall, and Anti-Spyware ( Paid Edition ) and Avast Anti-Virus (Paid Version) not the freebies, no viruses or spyware live here....... :-)

Window = easy to get help from anyone
Linux = sucks when you're the only one using it in the whole area you live in (need to find help from the net a hell lot). But it's FREE!!
Mac = Only seen it in use at music/art studios in my place
Solaris = Desktop OS with Java? Oh boy......
