They really don't. they think it will never happen to them, or there are places where you can get care for free.....and on and on. They can afford the computer, internet access, and often cigs, booze, pizza, and eating out. But vet care for the pet takes away from that "fun" money!!!!!!!!!
At the cat shelter I work at, people are always calling and saying they need a vet and can't afford it!! When told they can either sign over the cat and we can deal with it, or take care of the cat themselves, they somehow manage to keep the cat and get treatment. They just have to try and get the freebie!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of expenses that come up that people aren't prepared to deal with... sometimes, a poorer person can afford to feed, house, get shots for and love a cat, and that cat will live to be 23 years old and die in its sleep. Other times, the cat will have serious medical problems and need care that the person can't afford... if and when that happens, then the person should give up their animal. Being poor shouldn't keeep you from having a pet. How many people out there have children and can't afford their proper care?!

Because its a very serious problem, and it is EXPENSIVE.
Are the only people allowed to have pets those who can afford hundreds or thousands of dollars for vets?
Would you rather all those people that can't necessarily pay for a large, unexpected vet bills get rid of there pets that mean so much to them? What do you think would happen to all those poor animals? They would end up on the street or in over crowded shelters or worse.
some people say that if "they really loved the animal, they would spend the money" well not REALLY, not if they don't HAVE the money.
There are 29,000 children dying off starvation EVERYDAY whose parents LOVE them but simply cannot get food. That's the situation alot of these people are in.
And yes, sometimes people are unwilling to pay, but for people who REALLY can't afford emergency vet care, you can't really say "Well, you can't afford the vet bills, so you shouldn't have any pet at all"

It's common among small animal owners the most, I think. So many people, even the ones who CAN afford it, aren't willing to take their animals to the vet just because they aren't a cat or dog. Lots of people are posting with questions about their hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, etc. But aren't willing to even call their vet and ask.
Yes they are smaller animals, and in the long run they're cheaper too, but they're still living things. I think that if they're not willing to pay for treatment if it's serious, then at least pay to put them down humanely or try and find someone who will.

I agree that people should consider whether or not they can afford a pet before purposely getting one. But some animals (especially cats) just choose people and appear on their doorstep one day, hang around, and eventually become the person's pet without them ever thinking they wanted one. Granted, this is not always the case. Some people are like this with children too, but they have Medicaid for them!

I am with you on this one it really makes me mad people cant take care of what they got, and how about the idiots with a 2000 dollar stereo in a peice of junk car and then cant afford to fix the car when it breaks down! For some reason this is common to cat owners, not sure why kind of like having a kid then going on welfare. Just dont get it.

People see the animal, fall in love with it and don't even think about future problems or costs. In the block of units where I live we have several people who got kittens and didn't get them desexed now they are fighting every night When you complain they say "I can't afford to take it to the vet" now we have to put up with the noise all night.
I am a responsible cat owner with a desexed cat and he has regular check ups and inoculations

It's not just cat owners but a lot of pet owners in general. I keep telling people who want to get snakes that it isnt a walk through a park to keep one and they had better be able to keep it until it dies of natural causes or find someone to take care of it if it won't. Some people really erk me about it.

Unfortunately, people don't think through the implications of owning an animal and that accounts for one of the reasons we have so many well bred and pure bred animals turning up on the streets and in animal rescue shelters.
If anyone is going to buy an animal they really need to think it through as animals are for life as they say - not just for Christmas.
