I have a 81 Sportster, but the engine has points and condenser, which tells me it's from 1970 to 78. I've looked up case numbers at several web sites but my numbers don't come close to what i've found. EEEEK! I can't get the engine running right (it's running rich) without knowing the right specs.

according to this website it seems you do have a 1981 motor..

CAHB048624
It tells you that you have a XLH (CA)
1000 Ironhead XL (H)
1981 (B)
and 048624 is just the sequential number

Look for the actual VIN, then check with the DMV in the state you bought the bike. The VIN should be on the frame somewhere, stamped right into the metal, rather than just a plate that's welded on. It's usually somewhere near the crank case. Get a CHILTON'S on Harleys or look online for the schematic, then figure out which one most closely matches your configurataion. To document it, ask for your local police department to come out and inspect the engine/bike and confirm the VIN so that you can get a valid title for the bike.

You can try looking for the VIN on the engine block and you will be able to use that to decipher what year it is using the 10th digit (that is assuming the engine was manufactured '80 or later). Prior to that, VIN's were not standardized and you would have to find an old Harley service manual that beaks down the codes of early models.

Don't care what these others say ,it's not an '81. The '81 has electronic ignition only, unless someone converted it back to points. You don't need the year to tune a carb. Crank the engine up & let it warm up(1-2min),set RPMadjustment screw to get idle of about 1,000RPM, then turnidle mixture screw clockwise slowly leaning the mixture till the engine starts to die. Next, turn screw counterclockwise to richen the mix till the engine RPM starts to drop. Mix is correct when the screw is about halfway between these points.

Don't use the DMV to determine the year of a vehicle. They have no clue except what their computers display. Occassionally you will find one employee at the DMV who knows what is going on in the world, then they are fired.
