A very good question. Payton played on some dreadful Bears teams early in his career and for that reason you have to hold his yardage numbers in high regard. Of course the Bears got a lot better and had the fantastic team of the SB title year. Smith did not have the extended period without a quality offensive line like Payton suffered through. I would give a very slight edge in this question to Emmitt Smith because he was more of the total package in terms of power and speed (incredible speed to the hole). But I wonder what kind of numbers Walter would have had if he could have run behind the Dallas offensive line Emmitt ran behind.

neither, id rather have barry sanders since he is the best rb of all time- of the 2 i would take walter payton because he was ridiculously good and emmitt smith doesnt compare to him in any way
