I had this problem when I was a windows desktop user with a maxtor drive to fix it all I did was boot up my computer with the windows xp cdrom with the external harddrive on when it got to the windows partition setup it regognized my USB external drive as drive J I set up a partition on it then exited Windows xp setup removed the disk rebooted into xp.
I logged into my admin account formatted the external drive with NTFS.

You might check and make sure that jumper pin on the external drive is set as MASTER. That should get you working.

ok lets start by telling me is it connected via usb cable?? if yes then make sure its a working usb port.
is it connected by firewire port make sure that port works well.
last but not least make sure if they give you a driver cd you install it before you connect it.
