I am starting to pick back up my hobby of just sketching using just a black pencil and was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on how to make the sketches more interesting or realistic looking.

Draw from your shoulder instead of your wrist... the lines will flow more grcefully and not appear sketchy. That was the best advice I ever had from an art teacher.

Draw on paper that is not white. Any other shade- even a light color like ecru or gray - both the black and white pencil lines will pop off the page.

Using Charocoal pencils and blenders. Though I recommend using workactive fixit if you're using charcoal, it keeps the charcoal in place without making so much of a mess and you can still go back and edit it.

get a white pencil and something to set the drawing to prevent unintentional smearing. Remember the color of the paper is also part of the drawing.

I personally like to use a gummy eraser to shade when I sketch... They work very well...
