I always asked myself the same question. The bras were burnt in the 60s and 70s maybe this century we will be burning blouses.
Another side of the coin is that many people think that it is shameful to breastfeed in public. Basically why women got breasts and mammal glands is to feed babies.
Today as less women breastfeed, and they have been encouraged to do so.
Look at Nestle powder milk in the less developed countries, they have in the past given free milk powder samples to mothers and so discouraging breastfeed and encouraging them to take the more expensive and 'easier' way to babies nutrition. Women are constantly told that they are unable to breastfeed, when in reality just need a bit of perseverance.
Breasts are now a sex thing, a male toy and a female vanity accessories. Where to have them enlarge it is OK but dare to use them for what they are suppose to.
Today's situation will not change. The number of women that breastfeed is continuously reducing. What a . I had a great time with my breasts, for pleasure and to feed my kids.
My both grandmothers, (I have African/Brazilian background) were bare breast in the past. One in a village in Africa and the other in a village in the Amazons.
I think total equality for women will be when bare breasts are as acceptable as it is for men to show theirs.

I would guess it's because men are attracted to women's boobs, but women are not attracted to man boobs. Society places stigma on anything that is found to be enjoyable or pleasurable. And besides, we don't want men walking around with woodies all the time!

I've wondered about this myself. When I was a little girl I use to refuse to wear a shirt because none of my guy friends or cousins had to. I don't see why the double standard.

Because society has earmarked women's chests as something referring to sexuality. And being such an uptight puritan nation we keep covered up.

You have a point. It's a double standard! Some really fat dudes have jumblies as big as any woman's, but all anyone says is "eww!" (or they laugh...and then go "eww!")
