Lets see how many get it wrong.

I like some of the answers and most are right , however those of you that believe that your elected officials do not represent you have to ask did I vote him in? Can I do better? That is how it works , instead of us whining so much we need to get behind a representative that votes the way YOU want.

According to my social studies teacher a few decades ago,
it is a representative republic.

There are some issues that are solved directly democratically
(issue ballots), but the vast vast vast majority of laws are
created, deliberated and voted on by people we elect.

Indeed because of the checks and balances of a court system
that we don't elect, it isn't truly either of those things or both
of them - but something else again.

The United States was created as a representative republic, giving its citizens the chance to live in a democracy via representation, meaning if we mistakenly elect a moron into office, then we have the ability to remove him by a majority vote. This can no longer be said as the case, as the United States is evolving into a fascist plutocratic state. In the simplest of terms, a democracy is where the majority rules. As we have seen in the election which brought junior into power, he was elected by the Supreme Court (which was stacked by Daddy and Ronnie Ray-Gun's appointees) after coming in second place. So you can no longer call the land of the free a true democracy.

To further support my theory, junior sent troops in without the consent of we the people (via congress). Interestingly, large corporations seem the most to benefit from this "war," the biggest profiteers are "BIG OIL" (which Daddy and junior have a large stake in) and "Haliburton" (Veep Dick). I find it interesting that the fuel prices are rising due to the increased cost of oil per barrel, yet the oil companies (including the ones in the US) are reporting record profits.

no

most people will say it's a representative republic
but i wouldn't even say that.

it's an aristocracy or plutocracy. The definition of those 2 being that it's rulership by a small group of "elites" or "wealthy people"
USA was never meant to be a democracy, if you read the writings of some of the founders you'll see that they had nothing but contempt for the layman. They only trust their class to govern.

Just look at the elections. 95% of the time you're chosing from one wealthy anglo man or another white wealthy anglo man. Majority of them are related to british royalty.

at the local level or micro level there is a bit of democracy or representative government but not at the federal level

Representative republic, technically a democracy can not be applied unless constituents cast votes on daily basis regarding essential national issues for which most Americans are too lazy or busy about. Wouldn't you love it if you be responsible and held accountable when you voted "War" few years back?

no it is not- officially, it's a representative republic, but if you look at a study by political scientist, Dr Lawrence Britt, called, "The 14 Defining Characteristics of Fascism"- it might start to seem like a fascist dictatorship.

Represenatative Republic. However that's an official term, it's more of an aristocracy, as no one without money can run for office, and our representatives don't truly represent us.

representative republic

we just commonly call it a democracy.

But you could call China a communist country and technically you'd be wrong.

What's more important than the type of government a country is labeled with is personal freedoms and responsibilities granted the citizens.
