First of all...it's not DMXO - it's D M S O (Dimethyl Sulfoxide)
DMSO is not a bad thing, but it doesn't have any antibacterial properties at all - it is a solvent, that's it. Being so, it "wraps" itself around other molecules & "carries" them thru the skin membrane. Think of it as a bubble. Anything in the bubble will go into the body, thru the skin. In your case, oxygen & the DSMO itself, which has slight anti-inflammatory properties (like MSM (from which DMSO is derived), it supports healing, and fights free radicals.
What you have to be careful of is applying it to skin that has other substances on it. Dirt, iodine, flyspray....any of those will be carried into the skin.
I know of people who absolutely swear against DMSO. I knkow of other individuals who have had it prescribed to apply to arthritic joints, for it's support of a healing environment and some anti-inflammatory properties. I"ve used it - without gloves - I just make sure my hands are clean, then wash after. And no, I don't get that garlic taste in my mouth......so people do, others don't...but if you do, that gives you a good idea of how fast it gets into your system, from just getting it on your skin.
As far as the above comment on Furazone (or Furacin) being the same as "equine neosporin", that's dead wrong. Neosporin is a triple antibiotic (which the people stuff is great for horses, and does NOT melt out of the bandage, like furazone!). Furazone (furacin) is a known carcinogen...now why would you want to use that??
Farnam (I think) has just come out with a new wound ointment called Tri-Care. It's pretty good, and has a topical analgesic.

It is not that DMSO is bad. It is that it is bad in large quantities. It does the same thing as Furazone(equine neosporin) but it is a lot stronger and more potent. Used in large quantities, it can make a horse sick. Vets will usuallly dilute it with something else to reduce the potency. I dont know about anyone else, but I find that if I touch the stuff, it makes me break out. I have to use gloves if I use it. Again i just prefer furazone.

I discussed it with my mom who had horses all her life too and she doesn't recommend DMSO either. Too much can be a bad thing. Just like any other meds though. Lowest dose at the least rate of usage is best if going to use it. I have to go right now so, not able to give full detail. However, I will up date this when I get back.
Keep us updated and best of wishes! I hope your horse feels better!

Well, I saw "horse" anyway. its only TWO LETTERS OFF. SOME people! *glares*.
Anyway, good luck, I hope she getts better. It won't surprise me if the vet doesn't think he needs to come out and just gives instructions over the phone, since its coming down, but it won't surprise me if he does want to look at it. GOO LUCK! Give the your horse a carrot for me!
