I'm wanting to get a ferret, but I was wondering if you, answerers, thought so. Instructions:::.

1. Tell whether I should get a ferret or not.
2. Then right a number, that votes for a ferret, on a scale of one to 10.

Remember, I dont care about the smell or care, I can deal with it.

Example: Ria_Day215563987: I wouldn't get a ferret because they stink badly.Vote: 4.

Really, you are the only one who can decide wether or not such a unique, special needs animal will fit in your lifestyle. I love ferrets and have 5 of the little carpet sharks. They are the best pet for me and I can't imagine not sharing my life with them. But they are very demanding pets and most definately not for everyone. You have to be willing to take them out for at least 4 hours of playtime a day. And the poop scooping and ferret proofing is a never ending job. You also need to do tons of research and it certainly doesn't stop once you buy a ferret. I learn new things almost daily and am always trying to better the way I care for my fuzzbutts.
They are also expensive. Vet care is a big thing with ferrets (it's very likely that your ferret will have at least one major vet bill in it's life, either for surgery like adrenal gland disease (80%of U.S. ferrets get it) or an emergency). They also need to be vaccinated for distemper and rabies. Then they need very high quality food which can get expensive (I can give you a chart of the best foods if you are still interested). Along with litter (woodstove pellets), lots of paper towels and cleaner (lol), toys, ferret lax (for if they eat something they shouldn't and it gets stuck, also for hairballs since they can't hack them up like cats), and the list goes on.
If you truly feel up to the task and are willing to dedicate yourself to them, then go ahead, do more research. They are super fun, entertaining, and hilarious animals. But also a lot of work. You need to decide for yourself.

1 Depends on how u plan on keeping it, they are very much like cats, and are very inquisitive and need room to explore, keeping it locked in a little cage would depress it.

3 The smell can be easily controlled by a spray made for ferrets over the counter at petland, I would recommend giving it a bath every other week also.
4 Unfortunately they only live 7-8 years so be ready time flies

My suggestion to you is that you educate yourself before getting one. Ferrets aren't for everyone. They require alot of attention, they get into any and every thing they can find. Keeping the odor down can be a lot of work. They are prone to certain illnesses. BUT they are awesome creatures and worth every bit of trouble to the right person or family (in our case). So learn all about them. Go to the pet store and play with them and observe their behavior. And buy "Ferrets for Dummies". Subscribe to a ferrets magazine. And should you decide that ferts are the pet for you, enjoy! They're adictive, you can't have just one fuzzy.

I know its stupid now, but when I was little my ferret helped me overcome my fear of the dark ( because he was nocturnal and was always awake when I was sleeping), They make great pets, and if you like cats, they get along with them too. Besides the smell they are also prone to certain types of cancer... that how my buddy RC died. I say go for it....they will keep you laughing. Vote 8
