i have recently had the alternator replaced and now when i first crank the car there is a really loud squealing noise, after letting the car run for a couple minutes the noise stops..
i was recommened a spray for belts but its not working..
what could it be or what should i do???
could the belt be to tight or lose, or is there something else i should put on the belt??
its a 1984 buick skyhawk and please don't tell me to buy another car..
only answer if you know, if i find your suggestion to be the right one i will gladly give you 10 points

There should be 1\2" deflection on the drive belt.
What that means is that if you push on it between pulleys, you should not be able push it more than half an inch with your fingers.
If it is loose, get a half inch wrench, loosen the bolt going into the alternator near the top of it.
Push, or pry the alternator with a broom stick, piece of wood untill the belt tightens.
Hold it in position and tighten the bolt you just loosened.

It could be anything running from the belts. I'm not too familiar with your vehicle, but some cars have 2 belts. Others have only one. Check both and listen to a/c compressor, alternator, cam, crank, power steering, etc. If you can determine where it is, a local shop can either replace it, or lube it up if that is whats needed. Also sometimes cars just get a little rusty in places, so if that's the case you have nothing to worry about. Hope that helps, good luck.

They probably didn't tighten the belt correctly when they replaced the alternator. You might be able to find how to do it yourself - either online or at a library. Usually it just involves loosening and tightening a bolt with a wrench.
Loose belts squeal, but if you get it too tight, then it will wear out itself and the things it is connected to faster than normal. Got to get it just right. ^_^

Squealing belts could be a pulley that needs attention or a water pump going out or the belt just needs to be replaced.

Take it back to the shop. They should be able to tell you if the belt is worn or loose. Remind them that if premature wear occurs (such as tight belt wearing out the bearings, broken belts, etc.) because of incorrect installation, they will be required to fix the problems. Save your receipts and parts.

make sure the belt is tight and it is free of any defects- some times the pulleys get a build up and can cause the noise too

loose belt..... the biggest demand on the alternator is just after starting, thats when it turns the hardest because of the load. a loose belt will squeel till it warms and gets going.
