I don't think anyone is a lost cause. Everyone has a purpose. Everyone needs a support system. Some of us just goes thru hard times and that's when we need people in our lifes. Not when all your friends should walk out.
A lot of people think homeless are lost cause, but I always go out of my way to give them food or some spare change. They might be jopping me, but I know that I may have touched one persons life. Sometimes when you do give them good or change, there eyes light up. If that was me, I know that that would make things better. Just knowing that someone was there and helped me. That's why I do it.
So personally, I believe that nobody is a lost cause.

A lost cause is someone who refuses help and refuses to help themselves. I know a guy who had a really great personality and I even had a crush on him. Then he started using speed and eventually started smoking it. He quit working and would stay up for days working on the music studio in his garage. Then he'd crash and sleep for a few days and then start the whole process over again. He didn't pay his rent, maxed out his credit cards on purpuse then declared bankruptcy. He got evicted and ended up living in his car in my carport. I let him use the house during the day so he could shower and use my phone to look for a job. He smoked in my house after I told him not to, left his porno tapes in my vcr and didn't look for a job. I caught him and his friend smoking speed in my storage area. I tried to help him with job leads and stuff but he just wanted to be a DJ like he used to be and wouldn't accept any other work. Finally when my boyfriend moved in with me, he told the other guy to leave. He left a bunch of his stuff stored in my backyard and in my storage promising to get it as soon as he got a job. When I had to move a few years ago, the stuff was still there after 8 years! I recently saw a mutual friend and he said he saw that guy and he was still homeless and on drugs and all his front teeth are missing. I think he is a lost cause!

The bible states that a person who knows to do good & doesn't do it is an infidel. It also states that a man who will not care for his own family is worse than an infidel.
However......Jesus said to pray for everyone who despitefully uses you & to pray without ceasing in all matters,so I guess anyone can be changed & none are a lost cause until they are dead.

Someone without a light in their soul! Seriously; what leads a four year old boy to kill his infant sister? Some people live their whole lives to manipulate, lie, steal and shove others down to get what they want out of laziness, lack of heart, motivation; alot of these people can be found in the drug clicks. These people are lost causes.....they have no light in their soul (or no soul).

The Buddha once said (I'm paraphrasing here) "The only person incapable of enlightenment is the one who says that another is themself incapable".
So to me no one is really a lost cause, with the possible exception of Toby Keith fans.

Someone who I would personally consider a lost cause to myself would be someone who was totally shut off from the world mentally- someone who refused to listen to help or anything that maybe they needed, someone who would just be so defiant in self destruction or refusing to listen to anyone about anything...

When they aren't even willing to try......no matter how much they know it will help them. No matter how hard those around them are trying to help as well. When they finally just give up on life as we know it and refuse to change their lifestyle to make them happier or to make life worth living.
In truth......no one should ever be a lost cause. Never ever let anyone give up on another. Ever.

Committed irreversibly to self destruction. Not everybody who's an alcoholic or drug addict is beyond recovery, but some are truly lost causes.
