so, how do we encourage guests to provide a money gift instead of stuff for these 2 students?

Two ideas, one maybe risky:

1. Add to the invitation "Bob and Jane are still in college housing and therefore are lacking in space." Hopefully this will get the hint across.

2. Add "The couple is requesting that guests do not bring gifts as they are still in college housing." This is more blunt, but surely people will catch on instead of literally not bringing anything.

Word of mouth is also good - just remind family and close friends that cash is appreciated and maybe they'll tell others.

Well, unless you're living in dorms or your parent's house...you will need things (flatware, electrics, etc). It's tacky to ask for money as a gift.

There isn't a good way to ask for money. It comes off as cheap and tacky. Don't do it.
