while trying to draw blood/put in an IV?

A vein is like a tube and he probably went all the way through it causing a hematoma (a bruise). So now there are 2 needle sized holes in the vein. It isn't very serious and will heal, but in the mean time a different vein must be used.

"I popped a vein." Means that the vein being accessed is no longer good for IV or to draw blood because of several factors: the vein may be fragile and may have punctured during access, the vein may have moved during insertion of the needle, the vein may be torturous (convoluted).

It means they screwed up & have to find another vein to draw from. They usually say "it rolled" or "I blew the vein"
