For example, I am 27 but get on well with people round their 19s or 20s and they enjoy I am "their older friend".

i think thats its ok.... because you can set a good example for them.... (you know be there romodels)! i have a lot of friends that are 5-10 years older than me and we still get along fine! they actually help me with SOME of my problems........

I'd say that it was o.k. but I just had an incident with a friend whos older than me and the age difference kinda came up and it really turned bad cuz it was kinda the "your young and stupid so I'll treat you like crap thing." It sucked. But to you I'd say from experience, just remember that you ARE older and look out for your younger friends you know? Don't disrespect them just bcuz their younger cuz u might do it and you didn't know. Be a REAL friend. Dats all. Best wishes.

There's nothing wrong with having an older friend. If you get along with them then what's the problem? As long as the older friend isnt helping them to do the wrong things then its fine.
