It's cleaned when it's emptied every fortnight but I still get maggots when it rains - is it because I put dog doo inside(tightly bagged of course).

Three words BLEACH-CLEAN-DRY 1. Take it outside near a hose. Clean the bin with a 10% bleach and warm soapy water solution. Rinse with water. Turn up-side-down and allow it to air dry. 2. Only put clean recyclables in your bin. Rinse out any cans or bottles that go into the bin with water first. If possible allow them to air dry before putting them in the bin. 3. Try to keep your bins clean and dry. Maggots like dirty, dark, wet places. Can you keep the bin in a sheltered area such as a porch? If not, try keeping bin off the ground on a pallet or some scraps of 2x4. Drill a few 1/4-1/2 inch drain holes in the lowest parts of the bottom of the bin so moisture drains out. Hope that helps!

Dont put dog doo in the bin. Pour bleach in it after. And then hose it down.

ooooh maggots yuck. try bleaching out your bin. flies love anything that's rotten so clean it alot especially now since it's hot. you won't have that problem in the winter cause flies hibernate and won't be around breed in your stuff.

You could try pouring a bleach solution in your bin. I think you'll need to disinfect the bin more regulary. Please see my source for more details. Good luck!
