Hi, I just got my car a coolant flush at a local auto shop. When I got home I decided to look at my nice shiny green coolant in the reservoir..When I opened the cap I discovered the same smell and look of the dirty dark green coolant in the bottle...was i ripped off? Arent they supposed to drain that too?

I am worried because when it was tested they said it failed the boiling and freezing point with the lowest score!

In my learned opinion you were ripped! A coolant flush is meant to clean the entire system.A special chemical solution is added to do just that, then the system is drained and new coolant is put in.The overflow is part of the system, easily cleaned with a long flexible bottle brush.I say take your car back and demand that the job be redone in a professional manner.

If a guy wanted to really do the job 100%, he should clean out the overflow tank too, which would have made the customer happy.

The small amount of bad coolant in the tank wouldn't hurt anything when sucked back into the radiator, but the guy was more concerned about money than a happy customer.

It's little things like that that may determine whether a business succeeds or fails. The SMART guy will take care of those small details.

go under the car. Look at the radiator. There should be a bolt at the bottom of the tank. That should be the drain. Check to see if it was in fact cleaned off before removal. You can also check the radiator cap, not the reservoir cap. Open the radiator cap when the engine is cool and look at the condition of the fluid. A chemical is added then cycled through the engine after about 5min a flush begins. A machine pumps out the old coolant and new coolant at the same time when the machine is finished your reservoir is topped off and the vehicle is shipped.

I wouldn't worry about it unless your vehicle is overheating ...

some places won't clean out the reservoir, others will. some bottles have such small, tight areas that they can't be cleaned. ask them if they did an actual flush or just a drain and refill. if you paid less than a hundred dollars, it was probably a refill.
