In popular parlance, the Queen Mother was the title given to Queen Elizabeth, the consort to King George VI, after he died and their daughter Elizabeth II ascended to the throne.

More generally, the term can be applied to any former queen consort who is the mother of a current monarch. It is not always a formal title, though it was in the case of Elizabeth because, at the time of George VI's death, the more traditional title of Dowager Queen was still held by her mother-in-law Queen Mary, the widow of George V.

The Queen Mother was actually the mother of our current Queen. She was married to the Queen's father, our late King and died a few years back.

The" Queen Mother "is a special title given to the Queen's mother,by the reigning monarch. The last holder of the title was Queen Elizabeth II's mother,Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth(Queen Consort of King George VI,that is the king's wife),born Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.She died two years ago.She was much beloved by her country because she stayed in England during World War II and refused to go off someplace safer, because her husband had no intention leaving the country he was serving, and she had no intention of leaving him,and her daughters had no wish to leave their parents.
If Diana had lived there was the possibility that her son as King William would have bestowed upon her the title "King Mother."

I was fortunate enough to be in London on the Queen Mum's 100th birthday. I was standing in front of Buckingham Palace and it was so exciting. There were signs all over London inviting the Queen Mum into the local pubs for a "free one" with the patrons. She is Queen Elizabeth's Mom and Prince Charles's grandmother and Prince William's GREAT GRANDMOTHER. She was a feisty old bird. (Something I learned while I was in England.) It was a thrill to be there listening to more than 150,000 people singing Happy Birthday---when the Royal Guard came riding up with Queen Mum in Carriage. *WOW*

Queen mother is Queen Elizabeth's mother. She was never queen, though, as Liz inherited the throne from her uncle who gave it up to be married to a divorcee.
