Neat trick here, pay attention... get a gas can like a 5 gallon can. When you fill it watch the pump and put the exact amount in it, say 5 gallons. Now drive the car as normal, but don't get gas. Let it run out when empty. when it runs out MARK DOWN YOUR MILEAGE FROM ODOMETER, then add the 5 gallons in the can. Go to a gas station and fill up if you want a extended truer estimate. Again watch pump while filling and place even number of gallons in tank. Now fill 5 gallon can AGAIN...
Drive till you run out again. Use the 5 gallons + the amount you added (if any) and the mileage you have traveled to calculate your approx MPG.
Also fixing or replacing the guage should not cost that much, check junk yards for used (read that cheaper) working parts...

The gas gauge has nothing to do with calculating gas mileage. Simply fill up your tank. Note how many miles are on your odometer. Drive. Next time you fill up note how many gallons it takes to fill the tank. Divide the amount of miles you have driven, (the difference between your present odometer reading and your reading when you filled the tank) by the amount of gallons of gas it took to refill the tank. Voila! You have your gas mileage!

Fill the tank. Keep a record of miles you drive after the fillup. When you fill up again, note how much gas you put in. That's how much gas it took to drive the amount of miles you drove. Then do the math.

Find out how many gallons it takes to fill it...then see how many miles you can drive on a full tank. Then divide miles by gallons = miles per gallon.

Take the number of miles you traveled and divide it by the amount of gallons you put in your car and that will tell you how many miles you will get per gallon of gasoline

Well if your odometer is working, fill it up and see how many miles you go, then fill up again check how many gallons you put in, drive the same amount of miles, fill up again and divide the miles by how many gallons you put in.
