If you still have the original packing, you may well find the serial number of the unit printed somewhere in the box or the manual ;)

If you had the serial number, you could just see if it had the same one. Hopefully you got the serial number off the MP3 Player and wrote it down. Cause they say thats what your supposed to do with electronics. Incase they are stolen, so you have proof they are yours.

Steal it back and say it actually wasnt stolen, you just lost it under your car seat or something, if he pushes that he doesnt believe you, then you know it was yours for sure.

if your friend, and i use that term loosely, seems odd or acts strange when you ask to inspect it and magically say its yours because of a certain nick/mark on it acts suspicious... then BAM!! - you've caught them in a lie.
