does laptop already go with broadband or do you have to buy it?

Depends. A broadband connection uses either a DSL modem or a cable modem. The modem can be connected to a computer (notebook or desktop, doesn't matter) either with an Ethernet cable or a USB cable. Look at your modem to see which type(s) of cable you can use, then see which of those conections your computer supports. Sometimes, especially with DSL modems, you also need to install software for the modem.

We've been online with a notebook forever. We have a cable that plugs into our notebook and then into the phone jack. We have to subscribe to internet service just like with a regular desktop.

not all laptops come ready for wireless,check to see if it has a wireless card.You may have to buy one.
