You need to be very careful when cutting a tree down. Many people have been killed by cutting them down improperly. Normally, you cut the side of the tree out that is the side in the direction of the way you want the tree to fall. Normally, you'll cut this in a V. Then you go to the back side of the tree and cut several inches above the middle of the cut you made on the other side and angle down to the other cut. This wedges the tree over in the direction you want it to fall. Sometimes you may need to pound wedges into the cut to get it to fall correctly. Be very carefull if the chainsaw starts to bind. This could mean that the tree is starting to fall in your direction. Often it is good to have a guide rope attached towards the top of the tree before you start cutting and a vehicle attached to the rope to help pull it some to get it started in the right direction. Make sure to give the vehicle enough rope and room to not get smashed. Once the tree starts falling grab the chainsaw, turn it off and run. If the chainsaw is in a bind and you can't remove it, then leave it. Your life is worth more than a chainsaw. Also pay attention to how the limbs are situated in the top of the tree. If they are all situated on one side, you may not be able to fall the tree in the direction you would like. Also watch for limbs from surrounding trees or power lines that the tree might get hung up on when falling. I've seen trees that were improperly cut jump, twist, and spin. When they do that, it can be very dangerous. Good luck and be careful. I recommend having a professional show you.

Oh yeah, one other thing. Make sure that there is no evidence of fencing or metal wire running through the tree. If so, cut above the wire or fencing. If you hit that with your chainsaw it could kick back and hurt you.

For cutting up into smaller pieces remember that pieces that aren't totally on the ground can still fall on you, roll on you, or spring up and hit you. Look the situation over as you are cutting it into smaller pieces and try anticipating what it may do so you don't get hurt. You may want to figure out which sections to cut first to avoid problems like that.

I think that the proper way to do is to cut it from the top small part, then cut another section little by little as you come down lower. I strongly recommend to hire the pros, since it's dangerous and you need a proper equipment to do the job. You don't want to cut a tree down on your own, unless you are in the forest and you are ready to get hurt! Of course, if the tree was only 6ft tall and skinny, you can try, but you still need to watch which way the tree might fall. Don't forget to say, "Timberrrr!!!!" Let's cut the tree already laying on the ground, shall we?
