I have been bathing my pig once a week since I got him. I use unscented baby shampoo, which is gentle enough, and of course, I rinse well. Another advantage to baby shampoo is that if it gets into my pig's eyes by accident, it won't hurt him. You can also buy shampoos that are made for small animals at your vet's office, and often at larger pet stores or farm supply stores.

If your pig is an adult and has never been bathed, he may be a bit resistant to the idea of bathing. But, if you talk to him with a quiet soothing voice and handle him gently making slow movements, you should be OK.

Use a bathroom sink. Fill with an inch or two of warm water... don't use cold or even room temp water, since small animals can get a chill and lose body heat quickly. Just make sure the water is not too hot... it should be warm, not hot.

Let him stand on his own, but use one hand under the belly to keep him from getting his face in the water and to keep him from running off. Use the other hand to bathe him. Always keep at least one hand on him.

Bathe from the ears back only... use a damp wash cloth to gently wipe his face, chin and ears.

When you're done, wrap him in a towel, get him a treat (like a baby carrot) and cuddle him while he eats his treat and dries off. Dry him well before putting him back in the cage so he doesn't get a chill.

You'll need to get him used to a bathing routine, and if he doesn't like baths at first, the routine should improve his outlook on getting bathed pretty quickly.

I have found the best thing to do is to put water in the sink the later the Guinea pig up- but not his head or face, I use animal oatmeal bath shampoo and conditioner. Then just rinse off and hold them in a towel for awhile - do not put them somewhere they could get a chili and also do not use a hair dryer. They don't really care for baths at first but the do need them some, it will take awhile to get use to. Good Luck

Go to a small animal vet, they are the only ones to carry a shampoo sensitive enough for a pig...then fill the sink about 2 inches with room temp water. and wash away!!!! pay special attention to the butt, the males (females too I think) have a gland back there that gives a sticky secretion. wax like almost. just softly wet it and pick it off. Make sure to get all the soap out, dry him off with a towel, and get a flea comb(usually free at animal hospitals) and comb him thru...nicley...

Do not blow dry your pig, if it os too cold then don't do this at all. Just keep him as warm as you...you should be okay.

FYI NO! pigs don't seem to like this, but kids don't like it either till they get use to it and realize it helps then in the long run. Also look at his cage substrate, are u using news paper? It gets them dirty QUICK! Or just clean his cage more often they don't seem to mind laying in their on filth..hence the pig part I guess.

Good Luck with ur dirty pig...

I use to have a guinea pig. The way I gave mine a bath was just put him in the tub dont turn the tub water on that will scare them go to the sink with a cup and fill it up with warm water and pour it on it keep doing it and mabey put a little soap on DRY off good. Also hold your hand over the eyes so no soap or water gets in. also if you dont want it anymore go to classrooms and ask if they want it as a class pet. That is what i did with mine and they loved it and gave it alot of love

hey hun....i have never given my pig a bath but i do have to clean his cage out daily to keep him form gettin' to dirty...i also saw on a site that guinea pigs have a grease gland right about were their tail should be (if they had one) and some times it simply gets over active...just take a wash cloth with a little water n dish liquid and clean the gland....love daisy

bunny shampoo from the pet store is the best because of the lanolin content. The webs below will help you with bathing your piggie. Also will help keep him healthy.

If nothing else, take him to the vet or to a pet groomer.

my daughter had a long haired piggy that we bathed many times in his life. we bought special shampoo from petsmart and bathed him in the sink. yes, we did blowdry him because his hair was 6-8 inches long and we were afraid he would get cold from all that wet hair. he didn't seem to mind it so try it.
