Sciatica is pain traveling down your low back to the foot. It has many causes from space occupying lesions (SOL) to a herniation disc to osteophytes (bony spurs) at the intervertebral foramen (IVF). Unless you know what causes it, it is hard to treat except by pain killer medications whoch do not address the cause(s). An X-rays film or MRI can give an idea!

There isn't a best cure - once there, always there. Like you, I have bulging discs, and have sciatica in my left hip, which runs down my leg and can be excrutiatingly painful. I used to take mobic (antinflammatories), panadeine forte, prednisolone (steroids) but all that did was upset my stomach. I am now trying to conceive my 3rd child (I know, what a glutton for punishment!) so I am off all medication, and I am really struggling with the pain. I have to disagree with cold packs - heat packs work better. You can buy wheat packs, and put them in the microwave for 2 minutes - they work wonders. Physio works for a couple of weeks, but once you stop, the pain starts again. Gentle swimming helps, or just doing gentle leg excercises in the pool helps twice a week. If you do these things on a regular basis, it does ease. Then it's just a case of managing the pain. I really feel for you, I know exactly how debilitating sciatica and bulging discs can be, especially without any medication! Goodluck to you.

Hey there,
It is a fact that no one condition reflects sciatica and it would be prudent to refer to it as a generic medical term encompassing lots of symptoms that taken together describe a lower back pain that a patient suffers from. When someone complains of severe back pain that passes down to legs through his buttocks, even down to his feet and toes, doctors suspect him to be suffering from sciatica. Often sciatica presents itself as numbness or a tingling sensation that may not be anything like the severe pain commonly associated with sciatica. This tingling or numbness may be felt by the person when he engages in some activities.
On this site you can find very good tips on how to treat your sciatica: http://curesciatica.toptips.org

I don't have an answer for a cure as such and many of the answers here have their place but two tips that I was given I found invaluable, during an attack take plenty of rest ,lying on the opposite side that you r having probs with.
Another is when your bending down obviously bend your knee IE into a squat, but try to make sure when you bend down that your shoulders never drop below your knees its about that height that it seems to get trapped again.
One more thing so i guess that's 3...lol lifting heavy things often can set it off , even though under normal circumstances I can lift things when I'm vulnerable it seems to trigger it and prevent it from healing.
Other than that if you find an actual cure please pass it on..
best of luck...

Most cases of sciatica can be effectively treated by physical therapy or massage therapy and appropriate changes in behavior and environment (for example cushioning, chair and desk height, exercise, stretching). Other conservative treatment options include anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. NSAIDs or oral steroids), pain medications, and epidural steroid injections (however the latter carries the risk of possible side effects and complications from the needle puncture and medications used).
"Alternative" and "complementary" treatments include chiropractic manipulation which may give short term relief [2]. Acupuncture has no effect beyond placebo in treating sciatica.

No. I will go away on its own. While you have the pain, treat the symptoms with over the counter medication.
